MUSIC "T" With Chris Payton

-Chris Payton Gifted Guitarist-

The Daily T got the special chance to speak with 22 year old gifted guitarist Chris Payton! In such a short time this young man has had the chance to do some of amazing things with his gift such as play behind Robin Thicke, T.I, Brandy, Tamar, Kelly Rowland, Musiq Soul Child, Tasha Cobbs and many more big names, I mean the list is crazy long! How did he do it you ask? How did he become so successful so early and what has the experience been like you may wonder? Well The Daily T got to ask those questions and here they are! Enjoy :)

How long have you been playing Guitar?
-I’ve been playing guitar since the age of 4.
When did you learn that this was something you had to make a career of?
-I actually didn’t realize that until around 16. Guitar was a gift that God gave me at an early age, but I had no idea it would be something that turned into a career for me.
Did you have a strong support system that pushed you to be great in your passion?
Yes, absolutely. My mother, my grandmother, my uncle and aunt were my BIGGEST supporters, and made a lot of sacrifices just for me to be able to pursue music. Also my dad, grandparents, cousins, more uncles and aunts helped me along the way. It does indeed take a village to raise a child.
What was your big break as a guitarist (play professionally)?
Shortly after I graduated high school, I was called to do a show with Nelly. He was the first big secular artist I had a chance to play for.
After booking your first professional job what were some of the thoughts going through your mind? Describe that moment.
I couldn’t believe it. I remember calling my mom immediately, sharing the news with her. I couldn’t stop thanking God for the call and the opportunity given.
With also playing behind such greats like Robin Thicke, T.I, Mali Music, and the beautiful Faith Evans, how does this make you feel? Do you in any way feel some sense of accomplishment?
I’m proud but also humbled, because anyone can play for these artists. But God allowed me to meet the right people and establish the right relationships for these gigs. I’ve always been the young guy, and often times, a lot of music directors for these gigs, go with someone with experience, or someone that’s just older. But because I tried to carry myself with maturity and play the same, I was blessed enough to get these calls.
Did you imagine your career to turn out the way it has?
Being 22, I am extremely thankful for every opportunity given to me to play with the artists I have. I had no idea it would ever turn into what it is, and I can only imagine the next level God has planned for me. In no way do I take these things for granted.
From your social Media you are not afraid to give God the glory for your blessings, how important do you think it is for young people to walk with God and keep him involved in their passion and purpose, especially while pursuing a career in the Entertainment industry?
The entertainment industry is a beast. It is filled with lots of different spirits and energies. It is imperative that children of God constantly remain prayed up, covered, and strong in this industry, because it will completely change you if you’re not rooted and confident. There is a bible verse that Romans 12:2 which speaks on not conforming to the world around you but being transformed by the renewing of your mind. Don’t forget where your faith is and whom it’s in, because it will take you further than any man can.
So currently you are on tour with on the rise star ZZ Ward and have toured multiple times. What is that experience like?
Touring is bittersweet. I get paid to travel the world, see beautiful places, stay in the nicest hotels, and play in front of thousands of people. But sometimes I get a little homesick when I’m gone too long. Some can be on the road for 4 months straight and not miss home, but I’ll get out there and after a month I’m ready to come home! But it is an amazing experience in almost every aspect
Whats your favorite city you've visited thus far?
In the U.S. I’m going with Miami. The U.K. London, and Europe, Paris.
With all the experience you have and opportunities you've been blessed with what advice do you have for any musician that is pursuing a career in the entertainment game?
I would say, stay humble, and let your gift speak for you. Never feel you have to fit in, when you're a genuine person you will always shine brighter than the guy that isn't real.
Name for us some the goals you plan to accomplish before the 2015 concludes.
One of them is to get another placement on a major artist's album. Launch my website, with music, tour dates, and just things I have going.Chrispaytonmusic.com look out for it! And to partner with a few sponsors and hold a musicians clinic for young musicians aspiring to work in the industry and give them knowledge of how it works.
